The Radiation Physics team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust wanted to better leverage the wealth of equipment and dose data available to them to enhance performance, improve workflows, and strengthen patient safety. To support these goals, Philips invited the team to pilot OneSpace Insights, an enterprise cloud-based analytics solution designed to help healthcare organizations turn complex operational data into actionable insights.
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Philips have enjoyed a decades-long relationship. This 25-year history has resulted in a strong culture of co-development between the two parties, with the recent pilot of Philips OneSpace Insights being a great example.
Collaborating to apply a data-driven approach to improving radiation insights
Andy Rogers, the forward-looking lead interventional Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and a prominent figure in the field of radiation physics - notably as a former President of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) - was keen to explore OneSpace Insights, with a particular focus on dose management.
Andy Rogers comments, “Like so many organizations and departments everywhere, we were aware that we were not using all our data hard enough or well enough. We knew that there are lots of insights to be gained from our data that will make our services better.
That’s why when Philips came and asked if we would like to trial something that could take all the log files from all our X-ray equipment in cardiology and return the data back in a nice dashboard, I thought, yes! Yes, I want to look at it because its data related. It’s pulling things together to help us gain more insight.”
What OneSpace Insights delivers
OneSpace Insights is designed to help healthcare facilities optimize their performance, drive operational efficiency and structure inventory management by providing uniform views across sites, departments, modalities and vendors. This is made possible by the OneSpace Insights a suite of six dashboards: inventory, utilization, cybersecurity, service performance, assessment and dose management dashboards that:
Pilot successes: Moving from manual processes to immediate reporting
Most pertinent to the Radiation Physics team’s needs was the Philips OneSpace Insights Dose Management dashboard which provides comprehensive insights into radiation dose including patient dose radiation tracking and trend analysis, exceeded radiation alerts, visualizing distribution as well as capturing event level data for root cause analysis.
The OneSpace Insights Dose Management dashboard enabled the Radiation Physics team to shift from manual, retrospective reviews to more immediate, data supported operational meetings. For example, the system made it possible to automatically aggregate the data to show the relevant KPI’s. Faster identification and follow up of dose outliers also improved feedback loops and strengthened confidence in safety processes.
If OneSpace Insights was clunky to use, we wouldn't use it due to time pressures. Compared to our manual process, it's faster and more user-friendly, which is why we're using it. It should really be called 'One Click'.
Co-development to drive meaningful improvements
Close, positive collaboration between Andy Rogers’ team and Philips resulted in key insights and improvement recommendations being openly and effectively shared for implementation to make OneSpace Insights a solution that truly meets clinical needs. This co-development process was valued by both parties. In fact, Andy Rogers observed:
“What’s been very encouraging about the process of piloting Philips OneSpace Insights was the notice taken of our feedback. This was really impressive and meant it did feel like we were working together on something that was developing.”
Expanding insights and impact
Looking ahead, the Radiation Physics team plans to expand their use of Philips OneSpace Insights to include workflow optimization and clinical complexity analysis, leveraging both operational data and newly developed models.
